I am a very analytical person. My creativity flows from my need to understand and explain. I made a career of distilling processes to their essence and reconstructing them to be more efficient and productive. My approach to photography is an extension of my life’s work. I distill a scene to identify its processes and actors. I try to understand how the processes, generally the forces of nature and the forces of humans, have and are interacting with the actors to create the scene. I focus on one or more of the actors and compose a scene that shares a moment with them in an aesthetically pleasing way. Actors may be humans or wildlife. They also may be the sun, the moon, a tree, a river, mountain or other object. Each image shares a unique moment showing how its actors and processes have, are, and sometimes even will impact each other. But I also want to entice the audience to linger and to find their own story. I want them to imagine themselves experiencing the sights, the sounds and the feeling as if they were there.

Today I am sharing pictures of some birds we saw on a recent visit to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia, USA. Please note that the Pelican was photographed at nearby Jekyll Island.

A notable part of the bird life we saw was about 50 Little Blue Herons clustered among some trees in a remote area of the swamp. Refuge managers speculated that a new rookery was being formed for this colony to rear its young.

Dolphins

About 2 weeks ago, we made a trip to Jekyll Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgi in the USA. We took our granddaughter on a Dolphin Tour. This tour turned out to be remarkable. We floated among a pod of 13 Bottlenose Dolphins for about an hour watching them in various activities. It was a fascinating experience.

One of the activities we observed was mating. I learned that a female dolphin chooses a nanny to assist her to prepare and birth the baby. During the mating procedure the mother-to-be inverts herself, the nanny holds up her head so she can breathe and the male completes his task.

Nesting Time

It’s nesting time. I managed to catch both a Carolina Chickadee and a Tufted Titmouse carrying nesting material into their chosen cavity.

I had the opportunity to watch some male American Goldfinches as they molted from their non-breeding plumage into their breeding plumage. I included an older image of a male American Goldfinch in his non-breeding plumage, from our feeder at our former home, as the starting point. The remainder were taken over the last few weeks.

It’s breeding time so, birds are starting to show-off their finery. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph some male and female Yellow-rumped Warblers in their breeding plumage. Her, in the Atlanta area, we have the Myrtle subgroup while. In the Sacramento area, we had the Audubon sub-group. So, I included one of my pictures of a male from the Audubon sub-group for contrast.

Nuthatches

I enjoy watching Nuthatches as they forage in trees. These energetic, small, birds fly in and grab a trunk or branch that is many times their size to perch on. They quickly move up and down the trunk and branches of trees looking for insects. When they climb down, they face downward.

In 2 prior posts, I misidentified a White-breasted Nuthatch; I called a Red-breasted Nuthatch. I did do my due diligence in identifying them but still go confused. Lesson learned.

This week, I’m sharing a few more backyard birds from our new home. I’ve learned few some things. The tufted Titmouse behaves like the Oak Titmouse we had in California. It comes to the feeder takes one seed then flies away. The Carolina chickadee’s pig out; those tiny birds are always at the feeder.

I’ve taken a nearly 3-month hiatus from posting. Not because I needed a break, but, because we have relocated. We left Sacramento and moved to the northeast corner of the Atlanta area. We have a nice ½ acre property that is heavily forested, with lots of birds. I hope to get back on track over the next few weeks and post regularly. For those I follow, I’ll be back enjoying your blogs also.
