Fungi in the Backyard

Fungi on a Log – Image 01

A few weeks ago, a section of our backyard was set aglow in the early morning sun. We have a small wood pile I made hoping it might become a bee hotel. The bees ignored it. It’s now a larder for chipmunks, a hunting ground for wrens, a perch for squirrels to eat dinner and other things. It’s great fun to watch. On this day in August, the logs sprouted multicolored species of fungi and the sun poked its rays through breaks in the trees to set the fungi glowing.

A Few Small Birds

The bird is facing forward with a slight twist to its left presenting a front and side view. Its neck and breast are light gray with a light olive cast. Its back and head are gray. Its beak is gray, its eyes are black, and it has a white eye ring. Its red crown is prominently displayed as short, red line. Its wings are gray with black and white wing bars and yellow stripes

Here are a few small birds to enjoy.

Check out the Ruby-crowned Kinglet. It was a cold morning. It had itself puffed-up to insulate against the cold. Doing so included flashing his red crown. I’ve been trying for several years to get a picture with the crown showing; it’s a rare shot to get. Being all puffed-up, he looks like he escaped from the Angry Birds game.

Its back is a medium gray. Its beak is gray, and its eyes are dark. It is holding a brown seed under its gray claw.
